AMS Performance Open Airbox Intake Kit for G8x BMW M2 / M3 / M4

AMS Performance developed the BMW G8x M2 / M3 / M4 S58 Open Airbox Intake Kit to deliver maximum performance, response, and turbo efficiency with a motorsport-inspired design. At the heart of the system is a massive 3.5” carbon fiber intake tube and precision-molded 4-ply silicone couplers, feeding into turbo inlet elbows that are up to 128% larger than stock for dramatically improved flow. This open-airbox configuration exposes the high-flow dry filter elements to more ambient airflow, resulting in a more aggressive induction note and increased thermal efficiency. Dyno-proven gains include +86whp at peak and an average of +66whp above 5000rpm, extending power across the rev range. With a focus on function and aesthetics, AMS delivers a lightweight, track-capable solution that installs with ease and elevates both the visual and audible presence of the G8x platform.

The Power of Focused Engineering

  • AMS Performance approached the development of the BMW G8x M2 / M3 / M4 S58 Air Intake System with an uncompromising engineering-first philosophy, led by its in-house Snailworks Engineering Team. Leveraging advanced computational modeling, flow-bench testing, and dyno validation, the team engineered an intake solution that significantly reduces pressure drop and flow restriction throughout the entire system. Featuring a 128% increase in cross-sectional area over the OEM intake piping, the design enables the S58’s twin turbos to operate with greater efficiency, resulting in improved compressor performance and consistent power delivery across the full RPM range.
  • To offer both performance and aesthetic versatility, AMS Performance designed two configuration options — a carbon fiber lid version with magnetic fasteners for easy filter access, and an open-top configuration that includes a precision trim plate and premium stainless hardware. Each variant was crafted for precision fitment and durability, whether the user prioritizes a refined, enclosed appearance or the aggressive intake tone and airflow benefits of an open system. This dual-approach design ensures every enthusiast can tailor their setup without sacrificing AMS’s proven performance gains.

Slow Is Smooth – Smooth Is Fast

  • The intake tract geometry and silicone couplers were meticulously optimized to promote laminar, high-velocity flow into the turbos. Each segment of the intake maintains a smooth and consistent cross-sectional area to minimize turbulence and preserve airspeed. Additionally, the filters themselves are built with radiused edges to reduce entry losses, further enhancing volumetric airflow. This cohesive airflow strategy improves turbocharger response, reduces effort required to spool, and translates directly into a more responsive, powerful driving experience.

Mo’ Powa Baby

  • Validation of the design extended beyond lab testing. AMS collaborated with professional ECU calibrator Sam Barros, who tested the system on his fully built 2023 BMW M3 Competition xDrive running flex-fuel, upgraded injectors, a mid-pipe, AMS heat exchanger, and catted downpipes. After initial dyno sessions with the factory airbox at peak tuned output, the AMS S58 Intakes were installed and the setup recalibrated to utilize the improved airflow. The result – repeatable, real-world gains that translated into measurable power increases across the rev range.
  • Barros’ testing revealed a peak gain of +86whp at 5900rpm, with an average increase of +66whp above 5000rpm, along with improved torque and stronger throttle response across the powerband. These results confirm that the AMS system not only excels on the dyno but provides meaningful benefits in real-world driving scenarios — whether on the street or track.

Results That Speak For Themselves

  • In pursuit of absolute airflow precision, AMS conducted a flow-bench comparison using MoTeC instrumentation and MAF-based airflow data. Testing the OEM setup, two top competitors, and the AMS intake under identical simulated 600whp conditions, the factory system recorded -2.15 psi of pressure drop on the right intake tract — evidence of severe restriction. While competitor systems fared marginally better, they still showed significant pressure loss. The AMS intake outperformed all tested systems, showing only -1.05 psi of depression and flowing more air at every point. Moreover, it delivered nearly identical results across both intake banks — evidence of a balanced, precisely tuned design that supports smoother calibration and engine operation.

Track Tested. Race Proven.

  • Track validation further reinforced the system’s real-world capabilities. Professional driver Jackie Ding installed the AMS G8x Intake on his M2 race car, and dyno testing confirmed improved airflow and top-end power retention, particularly at high RPM where the OEM system typically falters. On track, the results were even more compelling: Ding reported higher top speeds, longer gear holds, and greater acceleration consistency — all of which contributed to measurable improvements in lap times. The AMS Performance Intake proved itself not just as a dyno performer, but as a true competitive advantage where it matters most — on the racetrack.
