AMS Performance Carbon Lid Intake Kit for G8x BMW M2 / M3 / M4
AMS Performance developed the Carbon Lid Intake Kit for the G8x BMW M2, M3, and M4 to deliver exceptional power gains, faster throttle response, and a refined induction experience for the twin-turbocharged S58 engine. Central to the system is a massive 3.5″ carbon fiber intake tube and smooth-flowing 4-ply silicone couplers, working together to channel unrestricted airflow into the turbos. The oversized cast aluminum turbo inlet elbows — measuring up to 128% larger than stock — provide a direct, high-volume path to the compressor wheels for maximum efficiency. A defining feature of this kit is the bespoke carbon fiber lids; fully enclosed, autoclave-cured, and precisely contoured to shield intake temperatures while offering a bold motorsport-inspired aesthetic under the hood. These lids not only enhance thermal insulation and reduce heat soak, but also contribute to a sharper, more resonant induction sound. Proven on the dyno to generate up to +86whp peak and +66whp on average above 5000rpm, the AMS intake system significantly widens the powerband. With dry filter elements for long-term reliability and simple upkeep, and precision fitment for hassle-free installation, this kit reflects AMS Performance’s dedication to high-performance carbon fiber innovation.
The Power of Focused Engineering
- AMS Performance developed the BMW G8x M2 / M3 / M4 S58 Air Intake System with an uncompromising, engineering-driven approach, spearheaded by its in-house Snailworks Engineering Team. Utilizing advanced computational fluid dynamics, flow-bench analysis, and dyno testing, the team designed an intake solution that dramatically lowers pressure drop and airflow restriction across the system. With a 128% increase in cross-sectional area compared to the stock intake pipes, the revised geometry allows the twin turbos to breathe more efficiently — enhancing compressor function and delivering consistent, high-output performance throughout the RPM range.
- To meet the needs of diverse enthusiast preferences, AMS engineered the intake with two configuration options; a fully enclosed carbon fiber lid variant secured with magnetic fasteners for easy filter serviceability, and an open-top style that includes a precision trim plate and high-quality stainless hardware. Whether drivers prioritize stealth and thermal shielding or desire the raw induction sound and airflow advantages of an open system, both configurations offer precise fitment, long-term durability, and the proven performance gains AMS is known for.
Slow Is Smooth – Smooth Is Fast
- Every detail of the intake’s flow path and coupler design was carefully optimized to maintain laminar, high-speed airflow into the turbochargers. The entire system preserves smooth transitions and consistent cross-sectional dimensions to eliminate turbulence and maintain velocity. Even the filters were designed with radiused entry edges to minimize intake losses, increasing total volumetric efficiency. This cohesive airflow strategy enhances turbo spool, improves transient response, and delivers a more immediate, potent driving experience.
Mo’ Powa Baby
- Beyond lab validation, AMS Performance partnered with pro tuner Sam Barros to test the intake in a demanding, real-world environment. Installed on Barros’ fully built 2023 BMW M3 Competition xDrive — featuring flex-fuel tuning, upgraded injectors, AMS cooling hardware, and catted downpipes — the intake was evaluated back-to-back against the factory airbox at full output. Following recalibration to take advantage of the improved flow, the results confirmed substantial, repeatable gains across the rev range.
- Dyno testing from Barros' setup showed a peak increase of +86whp at 5900rpm, and a sustained average of +66whp beyond 5000rpm, alongside improved torque and sharper throttle response. These real-world results validated the system's benefits not only in controlled environments, but during aggressive, high-demand driving — whether on the road or the track.
Results That Speak For Themselves
- For deeper airflow validation, AMS conducted flow-bench testing using MoTeC data acquisition and MAF-based measurement under simulated 600whp load conditions. Comparing the OEM intake, two leading competitors, and the AMS system, the stock setup exhibited a -2.15 psi pressure drop on the right bank — indicative of major restriction. Competitors performed slightly better but still showed notable losses. The AMS intake system recorded only a -1.05 psi drop and delivered superior flow at every data point, with balanced airflow across both banks — a testament to its refined, symmetrical design that supports easier tuning and consistent engine behavior.
Track Tested. Race Proven.
- Track testing brought the system’s capabilities into full view. Professional driver Jackie Ding equipped the AMS Intake on his G87 M2 race car and recorded stronger top-end performance on the dyno, particularly at high RPM where the OEM system typically suffers. On track, the improvements were even more apparent — higher top speeds, extended gear holds, and smoother acceleration translated directly into reduced lap times. The AMS Intake proved itself not only as a dyno-proven upgrade, but as a true performance advantage in competitive motorsport conditions.
